Bias binding - how to cut and apply

Bias binding can be used on many types of garments to finish the edges of your fabric where other finishes such as facings are not required.  This workshop will give you the skills to cut bias binding out of your fabric and then several methods of how to apply it to your garments.  These methods will also be useful for making other items such as bags and things for your home.

Some fabrics will be provided but please bring a bobbin of brightly coloured thread and approx. 0.5mts of cotton fabric, print or plain.

RCC Shrewsbury Business Park 1:15pm - 4:15pm

__________________________________________________________ Zips - concealed zip perfection

You will learn how to successfully insert a concealed zip with confidence, using your sewing machine and zipper feet.  Following this step by step method, your zips will be pretty invisible, (apart from the zip slider).

If time allows, we will cover the insertion of a lapped zip too.

Zips will be provided.  Please bring approx. 0.5mts of cotton fabric or calico and a bobbin of brightly coloured sewing thread. You will also need a standard zipper foot for your machine and a concealed zipper foot.

RCC Shrewsbury Business Park 1:15pm - 4:15pm

__________________________________________________________ Make a skirt

Come and enjoy learning some fantastic new skills whilst making a skirt style of your choice. You will learn how to adapt your pattern to fit if necessary, adjusting the length to suit you. There will be tips on how to cut out and transfer pattern markings and you will learn all of the sewing techniques needed to make your skirt including how to insert a zip and finish the waist. You will need some woven cotton material, a zip, interfacing and sewing thread. Details will be given on booking.

Skill level: Beginner plus - You need to be able to use a sewing

machine and have experienced making a simple garment.

__________________________________________________________ Learn to use your overlocker

Are you too scared to take your overlocker out of the box?  If so, this workshop will help you to learn that it is not as difficult to use as you may think. It is a fantastic machine that will make a huge difference to the quality of your dressmaking. Threading is sometimes a little tricky but once you know how to do it, it isn’t so bad.  You will learn how to easily change the colour of thread without completely re-threading the machine.  Tips will be given on how to sew knitted fabrics, how to sew with 3 or 4 threads and how to replace the needles.

Skill level: Beginner - You need to have basic experience of using a sewing machine.

General Information

  1. Unless otherwise stated, you will need to provide your own patterns and fabrics for making your garments.  Advice on this will be given on booking.

  2. We now have sewing machines available for you to use.  You are also welcome to bring your own machine (especially if you are learning how to use it) which must be in good working order.   If your machine is over 1 year old it will need to be PAT tested (call for advice on how to do this - it does not cost much).
